A’s Sweep Yankees

The Oakland Athletics were looking to sweep the New York Yankees and move up in the American League Wild Card Standings. Oakland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first-inning on a Matt Olson RBI force out and a two-run single by Mark Canha.

This would spark the Athletics to sweep New York in a 5-3 victory.

Oakland scored two more runs on a Matt Chapman RBI single and a Stephen Piscotty RBI force out.

Mike Tauchman got the Yankees on the board with a RBI single in the fifth-inning.

Gleyber Torres hit a solo home run for New York in the seventh-inning off of Tanner Roark.

He hit second solo homer of the game in the ninth-inning off of Joakim Soria.

Tanner Roark (8-8) was the winning pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. He pitched 6.1 innings and gave up seven hits. Roark didn’t walk a batter and he struck out seven.

Masahiro Tanaka (9-7) was the losing pitcher for the New York Yankees. He pitched six innings and gave up eight hits and five runs. Tanaka walked two batters and struck out five.

Starting pitching has been a major concern as of late for this ball club and they need to find a way to figure it out soon.

It is quite possible that reliever Dellin Betances and starting pitcher Luis Severino will be back by the middle of September.

Joakim Soria recorded his first save of the season with Oakland. He pitched one inning and gave up one hit and one run. Soria struck out two batters.

The Athletics are now in the first wild card spot in the American League. The Tampa Bay Rays are in the second wild spot in the American League and the Cleveland Indians are now 0.5 games back of Tampa Bay for that spot after being swept on the road against the New York Mets.

The Yankees are just one game ahead of the Houston Astros for the first overall seed in the American League.

The New York Yankees will start a three-game set on the road this weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This could potentially be a World Series preview.

The Oakland Athletics will begin a two-game set at home this weekend against the San Francisco Giants starting on Saturday.
