There was no speculation for second baseman Jonathan Schoop to be traded on Tuesday Afternoon at the MLB trade deadline. However, it came to a surprise to a lot of people that Schoop was traded to the Baltimore Orioles to the Milwaukee Brewers for prospects Luis Ortiz and Jean Carmona, and Jonathan Villar.
Jonathan Schoop is 26 years old. He will go under arbitration for next season. Schoop will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2019 season. His batting average with the Baltimore Orioles was .244 with 17 home runs and 40 RBI’s. His on-base percentage was .273.
The Milwaukee Brewers traded for third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals this past Friday.
Luis Ortiz is now ranked as the seventh best prospect in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. He is a right-handed pitcher and Ortiz played for the Biloxi Shuckers. His record with them was 3-4 with a 3.71 ERA. In 68 innings pitched, he has given up 63 hits and 31 runs. Luis Ortiz has walked 18 batters and has struck out 65. He is projected to reach the majors sometime in 2018, but 2019 makes more sense. Ortiz will report to Double-A Bowie and he is 22 years old.
Shortstop Jean Carmona is now ranked as the 14th best prospect in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. He is only 18 years old and he will report to Short Season-A Aberdeen Ironbirds. His batting average in 18 games with the Helena Brewers was .239 with four home runs and 25 RBI’s, along with five stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .298.
Infielder Jonathan Villar played in 87 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. His batting average was .261 with six home runs and 22 home runs, along with 14 stolen bases. Villar’s on-base percentage was .315.
He is 21 years old and will go for arbitration for the next two seasons. Villar will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season.
The Baltimore Orioles are in complete rebuild mode. They have done a very good job in acquiring prospects. Baltimore has the worst record in baseball, but they will most likely get the top pick and get a very good ball player who can progress through the minor leagues quickly.
As for the Milwaukee Brewers, their record is 62-47 and they are 0.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central. The Brewers currently own the first wild card spot in the National League.
They are all in to win it all in 2018. Milwaukee has a very deep lineup and it could be the best in the National League.
