When it looked like the New York Islanders were going to fold against the Philadelphia Flyers, Mathew Barzal came to the rescue for them. He scored the game-winning goal with 6:28 remaining in regulation to give the Islanders a 5-4 win.
Barzal had a three-point night and he assisted on John Tavares’s power-play goal in the first period. Barzal has 60 assists on the season, to go along with 22 goals. Wayne Simmonds tied the game at one with under a minute left in the first-period for the Flyers.
Anthony Beauvillier, John Tavares, and Mathew Barzal scored goals for the Islanders in the second period. Nolan Patrick scored two power play goals in the third-period for the Flyers. Claude Giroux tied the game at four with 6:56 remaining in regulation for Philadelphia.
Petr Mrazek made 32 saves for the Flyers. Thomas Greiss made 27 saves for the Islanders. With New Jersey and Columbus winning tonight, Philadelphia slipped to the second wild card spot in the east and they have 94 points. The Flyers will have to wait another day to clinch a playoff spot. They either need one more win or one more Florida Panthers loss to clinch a playoff spot for the second time in three seasons.
