The Washington Capitals had a 3-0 lead entering the third-period. Andrei Svechnikov struck twice in the third-period for the Carolina Hurricanes and they had chances to even the game late. However, Lars Eller scored an empty-net goal for Washington with 37 seconds remaining in regulation as they defeated Carolina 4-2.
Nicklas Backstrom scored 9:58 into the game for the Capitals. He also scored a power-play goal 3:12 later in the period. Alex Ovechkin also tallied a power-play goal with 1:55 remaining in the first-period.
The Washington Capitals have won five consecutive games against the Carolina Hurricanes this season. A better third-period by Carolina might give them a boost of confidence heading into Game 2, but Washington will be ready to defend home ice once again.
Petr Mrazek only made 14 saves for the Hurricanes.
Braden Holtby made 27 saves for the Capitals.
