The St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers would begin a pivotal three-game series against each other starting on Monday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee. St. Louis’s bats woke up early and they scored eight runs in the first two innings and the Cardinals took down the Brewers 12-2.
St. Louis extends its lead in the NL Central to three games over the Chicago Cubs and 5.5 games over Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Brewers are 2.5 games back of Chicago for the second wild card spot in the National League.
The Philadelphia Phillies are one game back of the Cubs after beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 at home in 11 innings. The New York Mets remain two games back of Chicago and they will begin a huge three-game set at Citi Field starting on Tuesday.
As for the Cardinals and Brewers game itself on Monday night, Yadier Molina hit a two-run single in the first-inning for St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals scored six runs in the second-inning on a Dexter Fowler RBI single, a bases clearing double by Marcell Ozuna, and a two-run ground-rule double by Harrison Bader.
Milwaukee scored in the second-inning on a RBI single by Cory Spangenberg.
Yadier Molina hit a solo home run off of Gio Gionzales in the fourth-inning for St. Louis.
Lorenzo Cain hit an RBI double in the fourth-inning for the Brewers.
Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the sixth-inning for the Cardinals off of Jay Jackson. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth-inning.
John Gant (9-0) was the winning pitcher for St. Louis. He pitched 2.1 hit less innings. Gant walked one batter and struck out three.
Gio Gonzales (2-2) was the losing pitcher for Milwaukee. He pitched five innings and gave up nine hits and nine runs. Gonzales walked four batters and struck out five.
Adam Wainwright was the starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched 3.2 innings and gave up six hits and two runs. Wainwright walked three batters and struck out four.
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Mike Moustakas left the game after he was hit by a pitch in the hand.
The X-Rays came back negative.
