St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty pitched five strong innings and gave up two hits. He walked three batters and struck out seven, but Flaherty received a no-decision. Yadier Molina ground into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but it led to St. Louis’s first run of the game and they would eventually beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0.
The St. Louis Cardinals avoid the sweep and they snap a four-game losing streak. The Cardinals are just four games back in the NL Central race and just 0.5 games back of the Washington Nationals for the second wild card spot in the NL.
Chicago Cubs second baseman Javier Baez left the game in the third inning after being hit by a pitch in the elbow. Baez claims he will be okay and will see what happens from here.
With the Cardinals leading 1-0 in the sixth, Jared Gyorko had an RBI single. Matt Carpenter hit a solo homerun in the seventh inning off the Brian Duensing. Yadier Molina hit an RBI double in the eighth inning. Molina later scored in the inning on an Addison Russell error.
John Brebbia was the winning pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched one inning and gave up two hits and struck out a batter.
Jose Quintana was the losing pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. He pitched five innings and gave up four hits and two runs. Quintana also walked two batters and struck out three.
The Chicago Cubs start a three-game set at home starting on Monday Night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The St. Louis Cardinals start a monster three-game set on the road starting on Monday Night against the Philadelphia Phillies.
