The Cubs came out as a late push for Justin Wilson behind the Astros, who were the team most reporters thought would become ahead in the trade. According to Multiple sources the Cubs are very very close to acquiring both Justin Wilson and Alex Avila.
The reports are saying that the Cubs will be receiving both Justin Wilson and Alex Avilia while the Tigers will be getting Jeimer Candelario and more prospects.
Here are some stats on each side of the trade:
Justin Wilson hosts a 2.68 ERA, as well as 55 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched. A perfect reliever for the Cubs favor. With him only being 29 years old, this gives the Cubs a more balanced “young” status in their bullpen. His last appearance against the Astros on Sunday, he pitched 1 inning with no walks, earned runs, and 1 K. The Cubs add a backup catcher in Alex Avila. .271/.392/.472/.864 is a pretty good slash line for someone who won’t play everyday. Aliva also has 32 RBIs and 11 HRs. Also a veteran catcher in a young clubhouse. A very decent package deal for a few prospects.
Jeimer Candelario, who has been up and down with the Cubs a few times since last season, is the Cubs #1 prospect. Jeimer is batting .266 with 52 RBIs and 12 homers in the Minors. Also has a slugging percentage of .507. Shortstop Isaac Paredes is batting .264 in the minors with 49 RBIs. Out of those 4, Jeimer Candelario & Wilson are the obvious headlines of the trade. BUT, Paredes could appear at the top of the minors much like Gleyber Torres did.
What does this mean for each side? The Tigers are falling off the edge into a minor rebuild most likely. So now they are loaded with new prospects obviously in order to help their future. Way different from the Cubs because their thought is NOW. They have basically cleared out their farm system with their last couple of moves. Not to worry though. They have young guys and gave away the ones they didn’t need.
Note: this trade is still not official but is reported to be extremely likely according to many sources.
