The Pittsburgh Penguins made a blockbuster trade by sending Derick Brassard, Riley Sheahan, a 2019 second-round pick, and two 2019 fourth-round picks to the Florida Panthers for Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann.
Brassard and Sheahan will both be free agents at the end of the season. That is probably why Pittsburgh had to trade away a few draft picks and it might have been too many. Derick Brassard is 31 years old. In 40 games so far this season, he has scored nine goals and recorded six assists. His plus/minus is -6.
Riley Sheahan has played in 49 games so far this season. He has scored seven goals and recorded two assists. His plus/minus is -7. Sheahan is 27 years old.
Nick Bjugstad is 26 years old. In 32 games played so far this season, he has scored five goals and recorded seven assists. His plus/minus is 2. Bjugstad will be under contract until after the 2020-2021 season.
Jared McCann is 22 years old. He will be under contract for one more season after this season. McCann has played in 48 games so far this season. He has scored eight goals and recorded 10 assists so far this season. His plus/minus is -9.
Projected lines after this trade: Jake Guentzel-Sidney Crosby-Patric Hornqvist, Tanner Pearson-Evgeni Malkin-Phil Kessel, Bryan Rust-Nick Bjugstad-Dominik Simon, and Matt Cullen-Jared McCann-Zach Aston-Reese.
Teddy Blueger will probably be sent back down to the AHL at some point and Garrett Wilson will probably be a healthy scratch at some point.
