Despite Sending Three Players to the All-Star Game, the 2019 Season is a Lost Cause for the New York Mets

The New York Mets will have starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, first baseman Pete Alonso, and second baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil represent them at the MLB All-Star Game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday Night.

Even though New York sends three all stars to the game this season, the 2019 MLB has been a lost cause for them otherwise. They have the second worst record in the National League at 40-50. The only team they are better than is the Miami Marlins and the Mets only lead them by six games.

If the season ended right now, New York would have the seventh pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. They have an entire second half to continue to sink and keep losing games or they could get themselves back into the National League Wild Card race but that is highly unlikely.

The New York Mets will have no choice but to be sellers at the trade deadline and continue to replenish the farm system. Some of the players they could very well trade is starting pitchers Noah Syndergaard, Jason Vargas, and Zack Wheeler. Third baseman Todd Frazier and catcher Wilson Ramos is also a possibility.

General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen should find a way to admit hit mistake and find a way to trade both second baseman Robinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz. They have both been horrible ever since coming from the Seattle Mariners.

Cano has been very lazy this season and he is also 36 years, but the bad news is that Robinson Cano has four more years left on his contract.

His batting average is just .240 so far this season with four home runs and 18 RBI’s. Cano’s on-base percentage is .287.

Diaz’s record so far this season is 1-6 with a 5.50 ERA. In 34.1 innings pitched, he has given up 39 hits and 21 runs. Edwin Diaz has walked 11 batters and has struck out 56.

A few of the players the Mets traded for them was outfielder Jarred Kelenic and right-handed pitcher Justin Dunn, who were both highly rated prospects in New York’s system and they are now the top prospects in Seattle’s farm system.

They could use both of those players right now. The New York Mets will be regretting this trade in a couple of years from now if they haven’t already yet.

New York has one of the worst bullpens in the MLB. They have blown so many games and if it wasn’t for their pitiful performance, the Mets would be in a much better place for the postseason right now, but they are on the verge of missing it for the third consecutive season.

Because of it, it more than likely that Manager Mickey Callaway will be fired at the end of the season. Former New York Yankees Manager Joe Giradi could become the next New York Mets manager because he knows the area very well.

Also, New York’s starting pitching has not lived up to standards either. Jacob deGrom’s record so far this season is 4-7 with a 3.27 ERA. In 110 innings pitched, he has given up 95 hits and 41 runs. Jacob deGrom has only walked 25 batters and has struck out 138.

Jason Vargas has been a surprise for the Mets so far this season. His record is 3-4 with a 3.77 ERA. In 71.2 innings pitched, he has given up 64 hits and 33 runs. Vargas has walked 20 batters and has struck out 63.

Noah Syndergaard’s record so far this season is 6-4 with a 4.68 ERA. In 105.2 innings pitched, Syndergaard has given up 105 hits and 59 runs. He has walked 30 batters and has struck out 101.

Zack Wheeler’s record so far this season is 6-6 with a 4.69 ERA. In 119 innings pitched, he has given up 118 hits and 67 runs. Wheeler has walked 34 batters and has struck out 130.

Steven Matz’s record so far this season is 5-6 with a 4.89 ERA. In 81 innings pitched, he has given up 91 hits and 50 ruins, Matz has walked 29 batters and has struck out 78.

He was moved to the bullpen over the last week due to his recent struggles, but Steven Matz will most likely be back in the starting rotation once the All-Star Break is finished.

Jeff McNeil’s batting average so far this season is .349 with seven home runs and 36 RBI’s, along with three stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .409.

Pete Alonso will most likely run away with the National League Rookie of the Year Award. His batting average so far this season is .280 with 30 home runs and 68 RBI’s, along with one stolen base. Alonso’s on-base percentage is .372.

He has already broken the New York Mets rookie home run record in the first-half of the season.

Michael Conforto has been one of their better players so far this season, but he has been in a slump lately.

His batting average so far this season is .244 with 16 home runs and 44 RBI’s, along with five stolen bases. Conforto’s on-base percentage is .359.

Amed Rosario, J.D. Davis, and Wilson Ramos each have nine home runs so far this season.

Todd Frazier’s batting average so far this season is .256 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI’s, along with one stolen base. His on-base percentage is .340.

A lot of people within the organization expected this team to be a playoff team in 2019. Brodie Van Wagenen told others to come and get them this season, but other teams have responded to them.

The New York Mets do not have a difficult schedule in the second-half of the season, but they will find a way to make it difficult. New York faces the Miami Marlins quite a bit. They also face teams like the San Francisco Giants, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago White Sox, and the Kansas City Royals.

The Mets will have some tough match ups against the Minnesota Twins, the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Nationals, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Cleveland Indians.

New York is currently 13 games back of the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East Standings. The New York Mets are seven games back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the second wild card spot in the National League.

The next two weeks will decide what their fate is going into the trade deadline.
