The Boston Celtics have acquired star point guard Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for SF Jae Crowder, Forward Ante Zizic, and Brooklyns 2018 unprotected first round pick.
First of all, my only response is WOW. I never thought the Celtics would trade Isaiah Thomas as he is beloved in Boston. The Cavs have really geared up for Lebron possible departure. This is a trade that works out for both sides but in the Cavs’ favor. The key part of this trade was Brooklyn’s 2018 unprotected first round pick.As Brooklyn will more than likely finish near the bottom of the lottery due to their lack of talent. The Cavs really hit a goldmine here as the 2018 draft class is absolutely stacked with the likes of Marvin Bagley III, Michael Porter Jr., and DeAndre Ayton. And they got a more than serviceable wing in Jae Crowder.
While the Cavs won the trade both teams got exactly what they wanted. The Celtics needed to unload some of their assets while acquiring someone who can not only win you games down the stretch like IT but has championship experience which will help the Celtics take that next step towards a title.
The Cavs, the winner of this trade, made the perfect deal. Not only did they acquire a unselfish point guard who can score in bunches like IT. But, with Lebron expected to leave next year they hopefully acquired a future once-in-a-generation talent depending on how Brooklyn does. Which I expect them to finish near the bottom. As, one of the worst trades of all time in acquiring two players past their primes in Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce it still haunts them to this day.
Now which team does better this year? Undoubtedly, the Celtics will have the better team this year. Kyrie is a upgrade from IT simply because he can take them to that next level due to his championship experience. Now how can he play without the help of Lebron? Only time will tell, but I expect his numbers to slightly rise as now he will be the first scoring option for the team. Now for Lebron expect him to be in absolute beast mode this year now that he has more of a unselfish point guard in IT.
