How this series win will affect the rest of the Yanks season

The Yankees just wrapped up a big 3 game series at home against the Seattle Mariners. They took 2 out of 3, but these were 2 must win games. The Yankees dropped the first game of the series in extra innings. The only life showed in that loss was a Didi Gregorius RBI double. That was the only run that was scored by the Yankee offsense but they failed to capitalize as the 1st place Red Sox also lost that night.

Game 2 was a wake up call to the Yankees. It was a must win game with Greg Bird and Starlin Castro both back off of the DL. Yankees CF Jacoby Ellsbury or ‘Cheif’ drove in 4 runs including a big 3 run shot to break the tie. Starlin Castro fresh off the DL had himself a good day with a 2 run single and a couple of hits. Greg Bird had a big day as well getting on base 3 times in his first game back.

Meanwhile Sonny Gray was throwing an absolute gem. His final line: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K. His quality start and the offsense sparking combined to get a 6-3 Yankee win in game 2. The Red Sox also lost which got the Yankees to only 3.5 games back.

The rubber game of this 3 game series was a VERY important game with the upcoming tough that schedule the Yankees have. The Yankees didn’t waste anytime in this game, scoring 6 runs in the first inning off of 5 Mariner errors. In the 3rd inning manager Joe Girardi was ejected after not getting an explanation for a possible missed interference call at first base. But that didn’t stop the Yankees red hot offense.

Castro picked up an extra RBI in the 3rd, and Headley had a sac fly in the 6th scoring Castro to make it 8-1. In the 7th inning Greg Bird came on to pinch hit with the bases loaded, and he came through. He knocked in 2 more with his single to extend the lead to 10-1.  Tanaka picked up the win for the Yankees with his line looking like this: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K.

The Yankees once again picked up a win as the Red Sox lost a tough one to the Orioles by a score of 2-1. The Yankees are now only 2.5 games back from first place.
