Manny Machado is 25 years old and he is still a free agent. The Chicago White Sox at the moment are the favorites to land him. The Philadelphia Phillies are also interested in him and the New York Yankees are monitoring this situation closely as well.
Machado is also looking for a contract that is 10 years worth over $300 million. If he signs with the Chicago White Sox, is it possible that the Cleveland Indians window is closed?
Cleveland has been to the playoffs for the past three seasons as AL Central Champions. They went to the World Series in 2016 and the Indians lost in seven games to the Chicago Cubs. The Indians blew a 2-0 lead in the ALDS to the New York Yankees as the number one seed in 2017. Cleveland was swept by the Houston Astros in the ALDS in 2018.
The Cleveland Indians played in the weakest division in baseball last season. Their record was 91-72 and they were only one game better than the Tampa Bay Rays, who didn’t make the playoffs. Cleveland won the division comfortably by 13 games over the Minnesota Twins.
The Chicago White Sox finished last season with a 62-100 record. I would find it hard to believe that Manny Machado is a 29-win difference. They will win 10-15 extra games with him this season, but Chicago needs another pieces.
What helps this team is that they have one of the best farm systems in baseball. Chicago will have a couple of prospects up this season like outfielder Eloy Jimenez, right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease, and catcher Zack Collins. They will have much more coming up in 2020. Right-handed pitcher Michael Kopech came up from the minors last season and he has a ton of potential.
Speaking of potential, the White Sox don’t have a ton of potential for the 2019 season, but they will have a ton of potential in 2020 and beyond.
The Cleveland Indians will win the AL Central Division title this season. After this season, the championship window could close on them especially if the Chicago White Sox sign Manny Machado.
He played with the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. His batting average was .297 with 37 home runs and 107 RBI’s, along with 14 stolen bases. Machado was caught stealing twice. His on-base percentage was .367.
In Manny Machado’s career so far, he has a .282 batting average with 175 home runs and 513 RBI’s, along with 53 stolen bases. Machado has been caught stealing 24 times. His career on-base percentage is .335.
