The Baltimore Orioles currently own the worst record in baseball at 29-66. They are currently going through a rebuilding phase. Baltimore probably won’t be a respectable baseball team again until at least the 2022 season.
New General Manager Mike Elias will look to make some deals with some ball clubs before the trade deadline hits on Wednesday July 31 at 4 p.m. eastern time.
Elias knows they have just an average farm system and they need to continue to upgrade it. The Orioles started to do that at the MLB Draft when they decided to select catcher Adley Rutshcman will the number one overall pick.
Baltimore will most likely have the number one overall pick again in the 2020 draft and they could also be the worst baseball team again next season, which would allow them to get another top draft pick in 2021.
With that in mind, one of the sacrificial lambs on the Baltimore Orioles in order to get more top prospects is outfielder/first baseman Trey Mancini.
He is only 27 years old, but Mancini will already be at least 30 or 31 years old when they are going to be considered serious contenders again. Does Trey Mancini want to be a part of this ball club for that long stretch?
He is probably by far their best player in the 2019 season, but this is probably the best time to trade him because of his value.
His batting average so far this season is .285 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI’s, along with one stolen bases. Mancini’s on-base percentage is .346.
He will be under arbitration for the next three seasons before Trey Mancini could receive a big contract.
One of the teams that could potentially trade for him is the Cleveland Indians. Even though they are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, they could use another bat in the lineup.
Cleveland’s record so far this season is 55-40. They are four games back of the Minnesota Twins for first place in the American League Central. The Indians are also in the first wild card spot in the American League right now. They would face the Tampa Bay Rays (56-43) in the Wild Card Game if the postseason started today.
This wouldn’t just be a solid short-term answer for Cleveland but it would also be a very solid long-term answer for them.
A few prospects that the Indians would probably have to give up in this trade #2 prospect third baseman Nolan Jones, #8 prospect right-handed pitcher Luis Oviedo, #11 prospect shortstop/third baseman Yu Chang, and #20 prospect right-handed pitcher Carlos Vargas.
Jones was a second-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. He is only 21 years old. Nolan Jones is projected to reach the majors sometime next season. He is currently playing in Double-A with the Akron Rubberducks.
His batting average so far this season is .286 with nine home runs and 45 RBI’s, along with five stolen bases. Jones’s on-base percentage is .429.
Oviedo is only 20 years old and he is projected to reach the majors in 2021. Luis Oviedo’s record in the minors is 6-6 with a 5.38 ERA. In 87 innings pitched, he has 80 hits and 54 runs. Oviedo has also walked 40 batters and has struck out 72 batters.
He was signed on July 2, 2015 by the Indians and his upside is extremely high. Luis Oviedo throws in the 90s and has solid breaking pitches.
Chang is 23 years old. He has reached the majors and played two games for Cleveland so far this season. Yu Chang has not recorded a hit yet.
In the minors league this season, his batting average was .277 with five home runs and 28 RBI’s, along with three stolen bases. Chang’s on-base percentage is .348.
He is very versatile. Yu Chang was signed as an international free agent on June 3, 2013.
Vargas was signed as a free agent on July 2, 2016 by Cleveland. He is currently playing in Short Season A with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Carlos Vargas is only 19 years old.
His record so far this season is 1-2 with a 8.33 ERA. In 27 innings pitched, Vargas has given up 34 hits and 25 runs. He has walked nine batters and has struck out 18.
Carlos Vargas still has a lot of developing to do. He isn’t projected to reach the majors until 2022. Vargas can reach the 100s already, but his slider is a problem. He could be a starter or a reliever, but Carlos Vargas could be a closer as well.
Some of the other potential teams Trey Mancini could be traded to is the Oakland Athletics, the Washington Nationals, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers, or the Minnesota Twins.
