The Pittsburgh Pirates have not had a very good season, but one of the bright spots on the roster all season has been first baseman Josh Bell. With Pittsburgh already leading 1-0 in the first-inning at home after an Starling Marte RBI single, Bell hit a three-run homer off of Adbert Alzolay.
He finished the night with three home runs and seven RBI’s, and it was one of the reasons why the Pirates took down the Chicago Cubs 18-5.
Javier Baez hit a solo home run for Chicago in the second-inning off of Trevor Williams.
Josh Bell hit a two-run homer off of Alzolay again in the second-inning. Colin Moran had an RBI double also for Pittsburgh in that inning.
The Cubs made the game interesting in the fourth-inning. They scored three runs on a two-run single by Victor Cartani and a RBI single by Brad Brach.
The Pittsburgh Pirates responded in the fourth-inning for three more runs on a Trevor Williams RBI single and a two-run double by Adam Frazier.
In the fifth-inning, Pittsburgh scored two more runs on a Corey Dickerson RBI double and a Colin Moran RBI single.
In the sixth-inning, Kris Bryant had an RBI single for Chicago.
In the sixth-inning, Bryan Reynolds had an RBI ground out for Pittsburgh.
Jung Ho Kang hit a solo home run for the Pirates in the seventh-inning off of Descalso.
In the eighth-inning, Jose Osuna hit a solo home run and Josh Bell hit a two-run home run off of Craig Kimbrel.
Trevor Williams (3-2) was the winning pitcher for Pittsburgh. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up nine hits and five runs. Williams walked three batters and struck out five.
Adbert Alzolay (1-1) was the losing pitcher for the Cubs. He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up 10 hits and seven runs. Alzolay walked one batter and struck out three.
That was the first game of this four-game set. The second game of this four-game set will continue on Tuesday night when Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.36 ERA) takes the mound for the Chicago Cubs and when Jose Musgrove (6-7, 4.27) takes the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
