The New York Yankees signed pitcher Luis Severino to a 4-year contract extension worth $40 million, with a fifth-year club option. This is a good deal for the New York. He is by far the best starting pitcher on the team. Severino is also arguably one of the best starters in all of baseball.
His record last season was 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA. In 191.1 innings pitched, Luis Severino gave up 173 hits and 76 runs. He walked 46 batters and struck out 220. Severino is 24 years old.
He has been with the New York Yankees since the 2015 season. Luis Severino has the chance to win a Cy Young Award one day. He was one of the favorites to win the award early on in the year last season, but Severino struggled at one point during the 2018 season that cost him that chance.
This contract was a bargain. Aaron Nola of the Philadelphia Phillies signed his extension earlier in the week. Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets is possibly next to sign a contract extension.
