The New York Mets lost out on the opportunity in signing outfielder A.J. Pollock. He decided to sign a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York was keeping a close eye on Pollock. Now that is out the window, they will most likely not sign Bryce Harper or Manny Machado.
That has upset many Mets fans because ownership isn’t willing to spend big bucks on players. They should be upset at the moment, but what if they decided to sign outfielder Marwin Gonzalez?
He is still a free agent at the moment and it is very possible the Houston Astros don’t bring him back. Gonzalez was an excellent role player for Houston. He was one of the reasons why the Astros won it all in 2017. The New York Mets need a player inside the clubhouse who has won a World Series title before and it would boost a team’s confidence.
Marwin Gonzalez can play anywhere in the field and New York wouldn’t mind paying him for cheap. His batting average last season was .247 with 16 home runs and 68 RBI’s, along with two stolen bases. Gonzalez’s on-base percentage was .324.
He would probably start somewhere in the outfield if the Mets decided to sign him. They however want to convert Jeff McNeil into an outfielder because of Robinson Cano playing second base and Todd Frazier or Jed Lowrie at third base. I don’t think moving McNeil to the outfield is a good option. Marwin Gonzalez would be a better option for them.
Potential lineup if they signed Gonzales: 1. (SS) Amed Rosario 2. (RF) Brandon Nimmo 3. (2B) Robinson Cano 4. (CF) Michael Conforto 5. (LF) Marwin Gonzalez 6. (C) Wilson Ramos 7. (3B) Jed Lowrie or Todd Frazier 8. (1B) Dominic Smith or Peter Alonso 9. Pitcher’s spot.
