The New York Mets set the tone of out of the gate in Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The Mets got two base runners on early for Pete Alonso in the first-inning and then Alonso jacked a three-run home run off of James Paxton. The New York Mets would then cruise to a 10-4 victory over the New York Yankees in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Mets tacked on three more runs in the third-inning on a Michael Conforto RBI single, Wilson Ramos RBI single, and a Adeniy Hechavarria RBI single.
The Yankees scored three runs in the third-inning on a Gleyber Torres RBI single and on fielder’s choices by Clint Frazier and Gio Urshela.
Urshela played well for the New York Yankees in both games in the doubleheader.
The New York Mets responded in the fourth-inning on a two-run homer by J.D. Davis off of Chance Adams to make it 8-3.
Carlos Gomez also hit a solo home run for the Mets in the fifth-inning off of Chance Adams.
Amed Rosario had an RBI double in the ninth-inning for the New York Mets in the ninth-inning.
Brett Gardener hit a solo home run for the Yankees in the ninth-inning off of Drew Gagnon.
Jason Vargas (3-3) was the winning pitcher for the New York Mets. He pitches six good innings and he gave up seven hits and three runs. Vargas also walked two batters and struck out three.
James Paxton (3-3) was the losing pitcher for the New York Yankees. He only pitched 2.2 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs. Paxton also walked two batters and struck out one batter.
This was by far his worst home start of the season. It seemed as if James Paxton was pitching on the road.
The New York Mets and the New York Yankees will be playing each other again at Citi Field for two games in the beginning of July.
The Mets next series will be at home against the St. Louis Cardinals starting on Thursday night for a four-game set. The Yankees next series will be on the road against the Chicago White Sox starting on Thursday night for a four-game set.
