The New York Mets have only swept the Washington Nationals once in the past ten seasons entering Sunday Night’s game. Yoenis Cespedes RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the Mets to a 6-5 victory. New York swept the series and they are off to a 7-1 start. Washington has dropped five consecutive games.
Bryce Harper hit a 2-run homer for the Nationals in the first inning. Adrian Gonzales hit a grand slam for the Mets in the third inning. Pedro Severino hit an RBI double in the fourth inning for the Nationals.
Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning for the Mets. Trea Turner had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Nationals and Michael Taylor had an RBI single for Washington in the seventh inning.
Washington had a chance to win the game in bottom of the ninth. Bryce Harper was on first and no body out and Seth Lugo made a bad pick off throw and Harper advanced to second base.
When Harper reached third base with one out, the Mets intentionally walked the next two batters. New York got out of the jam after that. Seth Lugo was the Mets winning pitcher. He pitched three innings and gave up one hit. Lugo walked three batters and struck out three.
Brandon Kintzler was the losing pitcher for the Nationals. He pitched one inning and gave up two hits and one run. Kintzler also walked a batter.
Jacob Rhame picked up the save for the Mets. He pitched an inning and gave up a hit and struck out a batter.
