The Milwaukee Brewers were a much improved team during the 2017 season. They finished with a 86-76 record. Milwaukee only finished six games back of the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central Title and the Brewers finished only one game back of the Colorado Rockies for the second wild card spot in the National League.

Because of Milwaukee’s improvement during the 2017 season, the Brewers have decided to sign outfielder Lorenzo Cain to a five-year deal worth $80 million. Milwaukee has also acquired outfielder Christian Yelech from the Miami Marlins for prospects (OF) Lewis Brinson, (IF) Isan Diaz, (OF) Monte Harrison and (RHP) Jordan Yamamoto. Brinson, Diaz, and Harrison were ranked in the top 10 in the Brewers farm system.

Cain is 31 years old and he won the World Series with the Kansas City Royals in 2015. Cain was also in the World Series in 2014 but they lost. His batting average was .300 last season with 15 homeruns and 49 RBI’s, along with 26 stolen bases. Cain is very speedy and he is also a very good outfielder.

Yelech is 26 years old and he is about to enter his prime. His batting average last season with the Miami Marlins was .282 with 18 homeruns and 81 RBI’s, along with 16 stolen bases. Yelech is also fast and a good outfielder. The Brewers might have one of the better outfields in the National League now with Ryan Braun in left, Lorenzo Cain in center, and Christian Yelech in right. Yelech played center field with the Marlins last season, but he will most likely be moved to right field.

The Miami Marlins are rebuilding and get rid of all of their top players. Brinson’s batting average in the minors last season was .331 with 13 homeruns and 48 RBI’s, along with 11 stolen bases (76 games). In 21 games at the MLB level, his batting average was .106 with two homeruns and three RBI’s, along with one stolen base. Brinson is currently ranked the number one prospect in the Miami Marlins farm system.

Monte Harrison is ranked the second best prospect in the Marlins farm system. He isn’t projected to reach the majors until 2019. Harrison’s batting average last season was .272 with 21 homeruns and 67 RBI’s, along with 27 stolen bases. Diaz is projected to reach the majors this upcoming season. His batting average last season was .222 with 13 homeruns and 54 RBI’s, along with nine stolen bases.

Yamamoto isn’t projected to reach the majors until 2019 or 2020. His record last season was 9-4 with a 2.51 ERA. Yamamoto pitched in 111.0 innings and gave up 91 hits and 36 runs. He walked 30 batters and struck out 113. Yamamoto also pitched two complete games and one of them were shutouts. He also recorded a save as well.

This was a good trade for both teams. Milwaukee just sent a message to the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals to wake up and the Miami Marlins received very good prospects in return.
