Hey guys! My name is TB24Gaming and this is part one of my MLB The Show 17 Roster Update Predictions posts. This week’s update is set to take place on Friday, July 21st at 3:00pm EST. I will mention a ton of players whom I believe deserve to be upgraded and some who deserve to be downgraded. I use FanGraphs.com for all of my predictions on players, so check it out if you want to as well. If I missed anybody or you all want to argue for a player who should or shouldn’t get upgraded/downgraded, just contact me on Twitter @TB24Gaming. Part Two will be out on Wednesday, July 19th. Enjoy!
Mariners SS Jean Segura (85 to a 87)
.349/.388/.482 with 6 HRs and 30 RBIs
Segura has missed a stretch of games which is why his RBIs are lower than most at this point of the season but he qualifies as the MLB leader in batting average and he definitely needs a contact upgrade because of it.
Reds 1B Joey Votto (91 to a 94)
.308/.424/.612 with 26 HRs and 68 RBIs
Votto has been sensational all season long for the Cincinnati Reds as he is on pace to shatter his highest single season HRs total dating all the way back to 2010. Votto deserves contact and power upgrades versus left handed pitchers.
D-Backs 1B Paul Goldschmidt (93 to a 96)
.315/.428/.579 with 21 HRs and 71 RBIs
Another NL MVP candidate is this guy, Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt is absolutely crushing the baseball and deserves upgrades to contact vs. R, and power vs. R, with a bit of a decrease to his contact vs. L as he is batting under .260 against them this season.
Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado (93 to a 95)
.301/.349/.556 with 18 HRs and 73 RBIs
Arenado is a guy who is all but solidifying his place as the best third baseman in baseball with another great year so far in 2017. He is batting .414 against lefties this season, and he has 66 contact vs. L in the game, that needs a major upgrade along with a minimal upgrade to his power vs. L.
Dodgers 3B Justin Turner (88 to a 90)
.374/.469/.584 with 11 HRs and 39 RBIs
Turner is the player that most of the community is investing in as their gold to diamond pick this week and rightfully so. Turner would be the league leader in batting average once he qualifies with enough plate appearances and his contact vs. L needs a major upgrade.
Rockies CF Charlie Blackmon (88 to a 90)
.325/.377/.603 with 22 HRs and 65 RBIs
Blackmon has been one of the best players in baseball this season and he deserves to be a diamond. His contact and power versus lefties is too low in the game considering he is batting .333 with 6 home runs against them this season.
Royals 1B Eric Hosmer (83 to a 86)
.312/.368/.467 with 13 HRs and 43 RBIs
Eric Hosmer is proving his case as one of the more legitimate free agents coming up in this fall. He should definitely be a gold in Diamond Dynasty considering the way he is playing this season. He is batting .316 against lefties so don’t be surprised if the big jump he makes is because of a contact vs. L upgrade.
Marlins LF Marcell Ozuna (89 to a 91)
.319/.378/.565 with 23 HRs and 70 RBIs
Marcell Ozuna is quietly becoming a household name to MLB fans. He had a good year last season and he’s following it up with a career season this year. He deserves to get upgraded big time to his contact vs. lefties and a minimal boost to his power vs. righties. It is a much deserved upgrade.
Rangers SS Elvis Andrus (84 to a 86)
.291/.335/.457 with 11 HRs and 50 RBIs
Andrus is coming back to his good ol’ days in Texas with a solid season to date. He’s hitting about .300 versus righties so expect his boost to come from that upgrade. Andrus is a good shortstop to invest in to make stubs come this Friday.
And I left one name off the list because you all voted that this player would not be upgraded this week and that is Astros 2B Jose Altuve.
That wraps up the upgrades part of this post! A lot of you may be asking about a few players who aren’t included on this list. Bellinger just got upgraded last week and probably won’t be given two boosts in back to back weeks. He did hit for the cycle the other day though, so you never know. Another guy is Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre, he’s a guy that is one of the most respected in the league but him getting an upgrade to diamond is unlikely in my opinion based on his stats so far this season. Yankees RF Aaron Judge is a guy who will be hit or miss to get an upgrade this week despite his season success. Judge is 1 of 21 since the all-star break and the devs are noticing.
*NOTE: Judge went 2 for 4 last night against the Twins in a 6-3 Yankees victory.
For downgrades, I’m only going to include their full statline with their splits on the season.
Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson (94 to a 93)
.250/.374/.455 with 9 HRs and 28 RBIs
.246 and 8 HRs vs. R; .265 and 1 HR vs. L
Padres 1B Wil Myers (85 to a 83)
.251/.328/.453 with 16 HRs and 42 RBIs
.255 and 13 HRs vs. R; .241 and 3 HRs vs. L
Rangers 2B Rougned Odor (80 to a 77)
.211/.249/.396 with 17 HRs and 40 RBIs
.225 with 16 HRs vs. R; .163 with 1 HR vs. L
Giants SS Brandon Crawford (88 to a 85)
.229/.272/.380 with 8 HRs and 47 RBIs
.216 with 6 HRs vs. R; .263 with 2 HRs vs. L
Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (90 to a 88)
.263/.356/.439 with 12 HRs and 45 RBIs
.247 with 11 HRs vs. R; .328 with 1 HR vs. L
