The New York Mets decided to invite 13 players to spring training that are not currently on the 40-man roster.
Outfielder Tim Tebow was one of the 13 players invited. He has been in the Mets farm system for the past couple of years. Tebow is 31 years old and it impressive what he has been doing in the minors league considering the fact he hasn’t played baseball his whole life.
In 84 games with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (AA) last season, Tim Tebow’s batting average was .273 with six home runs and 36 RBI’s, along with one stolen base. His on-base percentage was .336. Tebow will probably see a few games in spring training. He will probably be sent back down to the minors. Tim Tebow will still have work to do before he reaches the MLB.
First baseman Peter Alonso will be another player that’s invited. It is quite possible he becomes the Mets full time starting first baseman this season. Alonso will probably start the first few weeks of the season in Triple-A with the Syracuse Mets. He will probably then be called up after that and expect him to make an immediate splash in the MLB.
Peter Alonso is only 24 years old. His batting average in the minors last season was .285 with 36 home runs and 119 RBI’s. Alonso’s on-base percentage was .395.
Left-handed pitcher P.J. Conlon will be another player that’s invited. He did play in a few games with the New York Mets last season. His ERA was 8.22 ERA. In 7.2 innings pitched, Conlon gave up 15 hits and seven runs. He walked two batters and struck out five.
With the Las Vegas 51’s last season in Triple-A, his record was 4-9 with a 6.55 ERA. In 114 innings pitched. P.J. Conlon gave up 147 hits and 88 runs. He walked 39 batters and struck out 82. Conlon is 25 years old. He will probably start the season in Triple A with the Syracuse Mets.
Infielder Andres Giminez will also be invited to spring training. He is a player to keep an eye on. Even though Giminez won’t be on the opening day roster, he is the New York Mets number one prospect.
Andres Giminez is only 20 years old and he is very versatile in the infield. In the minors last season, his batting average was .281 with six home runs and 46 RBI’s, along with 38 stolen bases. Giminez’s on-base percentage was .347. He is projected to reach the majors in 2020.
Another player that the New York Mets invited to spring training is left-handed pitcher Anthony Kay. He is New York’s fifth best prospect. Kay was a first-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
His record in the minors last season was 7-11 with a 4.26 ERA. In 122.2 innings pitched, Anthony Kay gave up 124 hits and 69 runs. He walked 49 batters and struck out 123. Kay is projected to reach the majors in 2020. He will probably start the first month of the season in High-A with the St. Luice Mets. Anthony Kay is 23 years old.
Catcher Patrick Mazekia is another player that received an invite to spring training. He is 25 years old and is projected to reach the majors in 2019. Mazekia may not have much of a future with this team but he if impresses in spring training, things might change for him.
Patrick Mazekia will probably start this season in Double-A. He is going to have to be ready because injury to the catcher position has been a common them for the New York Mets. They signed Wilson Ramos to a two-year deal in the offseason. Travis d’Arnaud is the team’s backup and he never stays healthy. Tomas Nido is currently the team’s third catcher.
Mazekia is a left-handed hitter and it is rare for catchers to hit from that side of the plate. In the minors last season, his batting average was .231 with nine home runs and 39 RBI’s. Patrick Mazekia’s on-base percentage was .328. He is currently the 24th ranked prospect in the New York Mets farm system.
Left-handed pitcher David Peterson was also invited to spring training. Peterson needs to have a good spring training because he could be the Mets fourth or fifth starter in a year or two. David Peterson was a first-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft. He is only 23 years old.
Peterson’s record last season in the minors was 7-10 with a 3.16 ERA. In 128 innings pitched, he gave up 120 hits and 55 runs. David Peterson walked 30 batters and struck out 115. He is projected to reach the majors in 2020. Peterson will either start the season in High-A or Double-A.
Catcher Colton Plaia was invited to join the Mets spring training. Plaia is 28 years old. He has made his way up through the minor leagues from year-to-year. the MLB is the next stop for him, but three maybe four catchers are ahead of him.
Colton Plaia’s batting average last season in the minors was .255 with nine home runs and 29 RBI’s. His on-base percentage was .332. If Plaia isn’t in New York to start the year, he will start the year in Triple-A.
Right-handed pitcher Ryder Ryan is another player that received an invite to spring training. He is 23 years old. Ryan’s record in the minors last season was 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA. In 53 innings pitched, he gave up 41 hits and 21 runs. Ryder Ryan walked 15 batters and struck out 59. He will probably start the 2019 season in Double-A.
Catcher Ali Sanchez is another player that received an invite to spring training. He is 21 years old. Sanchez has a long way to go still. He will probably begin the season in High-A. Ali Sanchez’s batting average in the minors last season was .265 with six home runs and 38 RBI’s, along with two stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .294.
Right-handed pitcher Corey Taylor is another player that received an invite to spring training. His record in the minor leagues last season was 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA. In 66.1 innings pitched, Taylor gave up 78 hits and 24 runs. He walked 17 batters and struck out 56. Corey Taylor will probably begin the 2019 season in Triple-A.
Right-handed pitcher Josh Torres is another player that received an invite to spring training. He is 24 years old. Torres record in the minors last season was 9-0 with a 3.02 ERA. In 53.2 innings pitched, he gave up 53 hits and 21 runs. Josh Torres walked 21 batters and struck out 68. He will most likely start the season in Triple-A.
Right-handed pitcher Stephen Villines is another that received an invite to spring training. He is 23 years old. Villines record in the minors last season was 5-4 with a 3.11 ERA. In 66.2 innings pitched, he gave up 46 hits and 26 runs. Stephen Villines walked 13 batters and struck out 96.
Pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Tuesday, February 12 for the New York Mets in Port St. Luice, Florida. The first full workout is on Monday, February 18. New York’s first spring training game is on Saturday, February 23 against the Atlanta Braves. Opening Day for the Mets is on Thursday, March 28 against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
