The NHL offseason is in full swing for 2018. There have been many signings already including John Tavares heading home to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs for a seven-year deal worth $11 million. What else has happened?

The St. Louis Blues have traded for center Ryan O’Reilly from the Buffalo Sabres for forwards Tage Thompson, Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, a 2019 first-round pick, and a 2021 second-round pick. O’Reilly scored 24 goals and recorded 37 assists, in 81 games last season with the Buffalo Sabres. St. Louis signed Tyler Bozak and David Perron earlier in the day. This is a good trade for both teams. The Blues are trying to put a win now roster together after missing the playoffs last season. The Sabres are rebuilding.

Thompson scored three goals and recorded six assists, in 41 games with the Blues. He is just 20 years old and Tage Thompson has a lot of potential. In 30 games with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL), he scored eight goals and recorded 10 assists. Thompson was drafted 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2016.

Patrik Berglund scored 17 goals and recorded nine assists, in 57 games with St. Louis.

Sobotka scored 11 goals and recorded 20 assists, in 81 games with the Blues. He and Berglund’s age is 30.

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh signed a seven-year contract extension worth $47.25 million. He was set to be a free agent, but Tampa Bay decided to lock him up now. McDonagh was traded mid-season from the New York Rangers. He is 29 years old and McDonagh played in 63 games last season. He scored four goals and recorded 25 assists.

Forward J.T. Miller also signed a five-year contract extension worth $26.25 million with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He scored 23 goals and recorded 35 assists, in 82 games. Miller also was traded from the Rangers to the Lightning.

Defenseman Drew Doughty signed an eight-year contract extension worth $88 million with the Los Angeles Kings. He scored 10 goals and recorded 50 assists. Doughty is 28 years old and he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy this past season.

The offseason is just beginning.
