Ovechkin’s Game-Winner Sinks Penguins

The Washington Capitals forced a turnover in the Pittsburgh Penguins zone and it created a two-on-one opportunity for the Capitals, and Nicklas Backstrom passed it to Alex Ovechkin and Ovechkin hit the post but he stayed with the puck and swatted in the game-winning goal with 1:07 remaining in regulation to lift the Capitals to a 4-3 victory in Game 3 over the Penguins. Washington leads this series 2-1.

John Carlson scored a power-play goal 48 seconds into the second-period for Washington. Jake Guentzel and Patric Hornqvist (power play) scored later in the second-period for Pittsburgh.

Midway through the second period, Tom Wilson had another controversial hit. He left his feet and hit Zach Aston-Reese in the head and he left the game bleeding. According to Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, Aston-Reese has a broken jaw that will require surgery and he also has a concussion. Matt Niskanen tied the game at three in the third for Washington and the rest was history. Braden Holtby made 19 saves for the Capitals and Matt Murray made 18 saves for the Penguins. Game 4 will be on Thursday Night in Pittsburgh.
