A lot of people thought the New England Patriots were finished and they were going to lose to the Los Angeles Chargers. New England set the tone early and often on the offensive side of the ball. They scored 35 first half points and the Patriots won 41-28. With the win, they are heading to the AFC Championship Game for the eighth straight season.
Sony Michel scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the game for New England.
Philip Rivers threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Allen on Los Angeles’s next driver. Allen finished with two receptions for 75 yards receiving and a touchdown. Tyrell Williams was the Chargers leading receiver with five receptions for 94 yards receiving.
On the New England Patriots next drive in the first-quarter, Michel scored on a 14-yard touchdown run. At the beginning of the second-quarter, Tom Brady threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Dorsett.
Brady completed 34-of-44 passes for 343 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for -1 yards on two carries. Dorsett caught four passes for 41 yards receiving and a touchdown. Julian Edelman was New England’s leading receiver with nine receptions for 151 yards receiving. He also rushed for seven yards on one carry. Running back James White had a big receiving day as well with 15 receptions for 97 yards receiving.
The Patriots would score two more touchdowns in the second-quarter on a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Rex Burkhead and a 5-yard touchdown run by Sony Michel. Michel finished with 129 yards rushing on 24 carries and three touchdowns. He caught on pass for nine yards receiving. Burkhead rushed for 12 yards on four carries and a score. He also caught one pass for seven yards receiving.
With the Los Angeles Chargers trailing 38-7 in the third-quarter, Melvin Gordon scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. He rushed for 15 yards on nine carries and a score. Gordon also caught one pass for 11 yards receiving.
Los Angeles trailed 41-14 in the fourth-quarter and they scored two more touchdowns on a Philip Rivers 1-yard touchdown pass to Virgil Green (Rivers to Keenan Allen 2-point conversion) and a Rivers 8-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates. It was Green’s only reception of the game. Gates caught five passes for 41 yards receiving and a touchdown.
The (5) Los Angeles Chargers (13-5) season concludes. This was their first road loss of the season. The (2) New England Patriots (12-5) will be on the road for the AFC Championship Game next Sunday night against the (1) Kansas City Chiefs (13-4) with kickoff set for 6:40 p.m.
