Penguins Surprisingly Shutout Maple Leafs

It’s only October on the calendar but it was a big game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto on Thursday night. This game was supposed to be a high scoring affair, but the Penguins shutout the Maple Leafs 3-0.

Some forgot to tell Pittsburgh Penguins Matt Murray that he wasn’t supposed to look this good against the best offense in the league after missing the past few games with a concussion and playing horrible in the first two games of the season. Murray made 38 saves. He only had one shutout last season and Matt Murray already has one this season.

Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins with 8:18 remaining in the first-period. He scored an empty-net goal with 2:07 remaining. Kris Letang scored another empty-net goal for the Penguins with 1:08 remaining in regulation.

Frederik Andersen made 36 saves for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This was the first team this season the Toronto Maple Leafs were shutout.

These two teams will play each other two more times this season. The Pittsburgh Penguins next game is on the road against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. The Toronto Maple Leafs next game is at home against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.
