The Washington Redskins breezed to a 17-0 start at home on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. The Redskins survived a Carolina Panthers rally and they hung on 23-17.
Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes in the first-quarter for the Washington Redskins. He threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis and a 2-yard touchdown pass to Paul Richardson Jr.
Smith completed 21-of-36 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 13 yards on six carries. Davis caught three passes for 48 yards receiving and a touchdown. Richardson caught three passes for 31 yards receiving and a touchdown. Adrian Peterson was the Redskins leading rusher with 97 yards on 17 carries.
With the Carolina Panthers down 17-0 in the second-quarter, Cam Newton threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Devin Funchess (missed extra point). Funchess caught five receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver D.J. Moore had four receptions for 59 yards receiving and he fumbled twice and lost possession.
With Carolina trailing 20-9 in the fourth, Cam Newton threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith (Newton to Smith 2-point conversion). Smith finished with five receptions for 43 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Newton completed 27-of-40 passes for 275 yards two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 43 yards on nine carries.
The Carolina Panthers (3-2) will be on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) next Sunday. The Washington Redskins (3-2) will host the Dallas Cowboys (2-3) next Sunday.
