Tristan Beckmann’s Post Week 2 College Football Top 25 Rankings

There are a few words to describe what went on during Week 2 of the 2017 college football season. Battled, Hard-Nosed, and Highlight-Filled football all took place on the gridiron on Friday and Saturday. There were many key games early on in this season that will be pivotal towards the four team CFP rankings that come out later this fall. But for now, I’m going to release the second edition of my weekly top 25 rankings highlighted by a lot of changes. I’m going to be blunt with this fact, if a team did not play due to cancellation of a game as a result of the incoming Hurricane Irma, that may affect whether they are jumped by another team in my rankings. These teams didn’t deserve to move down, rather the team’s that played were so good that they deserved to move up. With that said, let’s dig right into my post-Week 2 Top 25 rankings.

Who’s Moving Up and Who’s Moving Down?

There were plenty of shake-ups in my rankings after Week 2 and expect a lot of shake-ups to occur in the CFB weekly polls when they release. Some teams are rising and some just cannot catch a break. New teams entered the polls and others exited the polls. Let’s take a look at a few of the biggest risers and fallers after Week 2!

Up: Oklahoma Sooners (#6 to #2) Explanation: Baker Mayfield led his Sooners on the revenge tour to Columbus and they grabbed a huge win over the former #2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Baker Mayfield has set this Oklahoma team up for another run at the championship. If they can play like they did last night, this team has a chance to beat the Crimson Tide of Alabama.

Up: Washington Huskies (#11 to #7)  Explanation: Washington used other team’s struggles in Week 2 as a springboard for them to leap up to the 7th spot. Jake Browning is still a pretty darn good quarterback and he has the ability to win big time games for this Huskies team.

Up: Louisville Cardinals (#15 to #13) Explanation: Lamar Jackson was flat out impressive against North Carolina yesterday.  ACC games on the road are always going to be a dogfight no matter the opponent but Louisville’s offense looked like one capable of winning the ACC. The defense still has to get better though as they struggled to play good passing defense against UNC’s pair of quarterbacks.

Up: TCU Horned Frogs (NR to #20) Explanation: TCU went on the road and dominated a solid SEC team in Arkansas. Kenny Hill and his offense did their job and led TCU to a hard fought victory. What impressed me was TCU’s defense who really were not afraid of Arkansas QB Austin Allen and his wide receiving core. TCU is a sleeper Big 12 contender and one who could spoil the state of Oklahoma’s party on top of the conference.

Down: Ohio State Buckeyes (#2 to #8) Explanation: Ohio State wasn’t too high on my radar after their first half struggles with Indiana in week one. J.T. Barrett is not capable of winning a national championship, I said it. Most Ohio State fans do not want to hear that but he cannot do it. He was not very good last night in the loss to Oklahoma and

Down: Stanford Cardinal (#14 to #19) Explanation: Stanford struggled mightily on the road against #4 USC. Sam Darnold and the Trojans are really good but I thought that the Cardinal defense would have a shot at holding them down for a while. USC charged past Stanford and made their statement to the rest of the PAC-12. This might be the Trojans best team since, how dare I say it, the 2006 squad with Reggie Bush.

Down: Wisconsin Badgers (#9 to #12) Explanation: Wisconsin has struggled in both of their games to get off to a good start and while they dominated Utah State after their slow start, they only defeated FAU 31-14 which is too close for a game that really should’ve been a cakewalk. Wisconsin has no quarterback identity and for that I can’t see this team being better than Penn State, Michigan, or Ohio State.

Down: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (#22 to NR) Explanation: I was super high on this Notre Dame team getting the victory at home against #15 Georgia. And the Fighting Irish failed, falling to 1-1, and they struggled all game to get any sort of running game established against the Bulldogs solid defense. Georgia won the game and Notre Dame failed to really impress me. The Irish could be back in this rankings list soon though. They are still a solid football team.
