The Carolina Panthers might shutdown quarterback Cam Newton for the entire 2019 season. He missed the last couple of games in the 2018 season because of a shoulder injury. Carolina’s owner David Tepper opened the possibility of having Newton not play in 2019.
Cam Newton is 29 years old. He was the number one pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Newton completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 3,395 yards 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions this past season. He also rushed for 488 yards on 101 carries and four touchdowns this past season.
After the 2019 season, Cam Newton will only have one more year remaining on his contract. Since it is possible he could miss the entire 2019 season, who could be the possible replacements for him?
Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke could be an option for the 2019 season. He completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 320 yards one touchdown and three interceptions this past season. Heinicke suffered an elbow injury in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Third string quarterback Kyle Allen could be an option for the 2019 season. He completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns this past season.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor could be an option for the 2019 season. He will be a free agent in March. The Browns will most likely not bring him back. Taylor was injured in Week 3 against the New York Jets and he lost his job to Baker Mayfield for good. Tyrod Taylor completed 49.4 percent of his passes for 473 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 125 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles could be an option for the 2019 season. Head Coach Doug Pederson made it clear to reporters on Tuesday that Carson Wentz is the starting quarterback for this team moving forward. Foles lead the Eagles back to the playoffs after Carson Wentz got hurt again this season. Nick Foles completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 1,413 yards seven touchdowns and four interceptions.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Trevor Siemian could be an option for the 2019 season. He will be a free agent in March. Minnesota could keep him around to be Kirk Cousins backup again next season. Siemian has proven he could be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He started in 2016 and 2017 with the Denver Broncos. In his career, Trevor Siemian has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 5,686 yards 30 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick could be an option for the 2019 season. He has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season with the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick would make sense here because the Carolina Panthers signed safety Eric Reid during the 2018 season. None of the other teams gave Reid a chance because of his political views. Kaepernick is in the same situation. He is also better than some of these backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
