Even though the New York Yankees won 100 games last season, they needed to address the starting rotation. The Yankees acquired left-handed pitcher James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners for left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield, right-handed pitcher Erik Swanson, and outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams.
Paxton is 30 years old and he has been very good the past two seasons for the Seattle Mariners. His record this past season was 11-6 with a 3.76 ERA. In 160.1 innings pitched, he gave up 134 hits and 67 runs. James Paxton walked 42 batters and struck out 208 batters.
Sheffield was the number one ranked prospect in the New York Yankees farm system. He is only 22 years old. Justus Sheffield’s stats in the minors last season was 7-6 with a 2.48 ERA. In 116 innings pitched, he has given up 82 hits and 34 runs. Sheffield has walked 50 batters and has struck out 123 batters. He will start next season with either the Seattle Mariners or in Triple-A.
Swanson’s record in the minors last season was 8-2 with a 2.66 ERA. In 121.2 innings pitched, he has given up 93 hits and 38 runs. Erik Swanson has walked 29 batters and has struck out 139 batters. He is 25 years old. Swanson will start next season in Triple-A with the Tacoma Rainiers.
Thompson-Williams is 23 years old. His batting average in the minors this past season was .299 with 22 home runs and 74 RBI’s, along with 20 stolen bases. Dom Thompson-Williams’s on-base percentage was .363. He will start next season in Double-A with the Arkansas Travelers.
