It was a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees in the first game of a double header after Monday night’s game was postponed due to inclement weather.
With the gamed tied at four in the bottom of the fourth-inning, Luke Voit hit a go-ahead three-run homer off of Zack Wheeler and Gio Urshela also hit a two-run homer off of Wheeler in that inning to tie the game before the Voit home run as the New York Yankees took down the Mets in Game 1 of a doubleheader 12-5.
Kendry Morales hit an RBI single for the Yankees in the first-inning.
The New York Mets scored four runs in the fourth-inning thanks to a Juan Lagares infield RBI single and a Jeff McNeil three-run homer off of Masahiro Tanaka. For some reason, the New York Yankees though he was going to bunt. The Yankees also committed two errors that inning. One of them was by Didi Gregorius and another was by Luke Voit.
Gary Sanchez had an RBI single in the second-inning for the New York Yankees.
When the Yankees had a 7-4 lead in the fifth-inning, Gio Urshela had an RBI single and Brett Gardner had an RBI triple.
Zack Wheeler (5-4) was yanked after that. He was the losing pitcher for the Mets as he only pitched 4.2 innings and gave up 10 hits and nine runs. Wheeler also walked one batter and struck out six.
Amed Rosario had an RBI single for the Mets in the sixth-inning.
The New York Yankees tacked on three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings thanks to a Gio Urshela RBI double and a two-run homer by Gary Sanchez off of Tim Peterson.
Masahiro Tanaka (4-5) was the winning pitcher for the Yankees. He pitched 6.2 average innings and gave up seven hits and five runs. Tanaka did not walk a batter and he struck out seven.
